Oftentimes, clients come to coaching sessions with unmet needs or desires. Meeting their goals usually requires them to adjust, adapt, or amend something—whether it’s a habit, a mindset, or a perspective.
Standing on the edge of change can feel uncomfortable, and that’s when the inner voice often sounds the alarm: What if I fail? What if other people laugh at me? What if…
A question I often ask clients, and one that proves extremely helpful, is to explore the source and depth of those risks. Put quite plainly, saying out loud what’s the worst that could happen demystifies the fear. It opens up space for curiosity, and allows me to support clients in exploring what’s holding them back with less fear and more openness.
So the next time you find yourself stuck, try this simple reflection:
- What’s the worst that could happen?
- What’s the best that could happen?
- Where are you leaning between these two possible extremes?
